I know there has been a lot of discussion about the Hammacher Schlemmer Digital Photo Converter (CRS Photo Scanner which is also sold by other retailers) on this forum, but no reasonable or logical answers or solutions have been provided. I'm not blaming anyone but I'd like to start a thread where we can work out some of the issues that are happening with the CRS Photo Scanner. I realize that ArcSoft does not make the hardware; they are only providing third party software for using the scanner, but I'd like to think that by describing our problems and by those who've found solutions or work around posting their results, we can start to help each other figure out what the issue is with the scanner.
Even though ArcSoft doesn't make the hardware, I figured this is a good place for such a discussion since ArcSoft is the more recognized and organized name associated with the software. To begin, I'll describe my problem. I am using Windows Vista 32-bit. I installed the driver and software by following the directions to the letter. The scanner worked great for approximately 1300 photos and I was very pleased. Recently, however, the scanner has been 'moody.'
For example, I would scan 5 photos and then the software stopped recognizing the scanner and if seemed to freeze. I would close PhotoImpressions and restart the program and when I clicked acquire from scanner it would go to the acquizition screen but the Live View from the scanner was blank and I couldn't scan any photos. Upon restarting the machine, the software would recognize the scanner and I could scan 5-8 photos and then it would freeze again.
Like I said, it worked great for scanning about 1300 photos but now I can't get it to scan any. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers and software numerous times and now if won't recognize the driver for the scanner at all. Has anyone had a similar issue, or has anyone found a way for Vista to recognize the driver so it will work reliably? To anyone at ArcSoft, did you create the driver for the hardware, or did you only create the software? I believe my problem is driver related. Does anyone have an updated driver for this piece of hardware? The date of the driver that came with it says 2007 and since I purchased it recently you'd think there would be a more up to date driver.
Anyone with advise is highly encouraged to help. Anyone with similar or even completely unrelated issues please post and maybe we can all help each other out. We make generic image editing software that works with any device that supports the standard Windows methods of image acquisition.

We test with a variety of major brand scanners like Epson, Canon and HP and the software works properly. CRS and similar vendors bundle our software and do all the testing themselves with the device and are responsible for any device support until the point where the image has been successfully transferred to the PC and can be opened from the hard drive into our application. At that point, we're happy to answer any questions about using our software. Jason, I understand ArcSoft's position on this topic, that's why I stated in my original post that I'm not blaming anyone. This forum just seems like the first place people go when they first have an issue with the scanner, so why not make it a place where we can help get things fixed regardless of the ArcSoft software. I'm not asking ArcSoft to answer any questions; I'm calling on others who have had issues with the CRS Photo Scanner itself to come forward and talk about the issues they've had and help others find solutions if they've come across any.
Anyone have any suggestions for fixing Vista driver issues with the scanner? My calibrate button was always grayed out ever since I started using it. I ignored it and it worked for about 1300 photos and now I can't even get the software to recognize that it's plugged in. I wasn't trying to scan 35mm slides, just 3x5 photos so I can't say I had the same experience. The color and brightness on all my slides was fine. One thing I did notice is that if you leave the cartridge in the scanner for longer, the light should automatically brighten depending on the color of the image being scanned.
So you are able to scan, but the problem is the darkness once they're on the computer? What operating system are you using?
Do you know what driver version you're using? (to find out, right-click on My Computer or Computer, go to Manage, on the left, choose Device Manager, (make sure the scanner is plugged in), click on Imaging Devices in the list, find the CLS Photo Scanner, right-click on it, go to Properties, on the Driver tab it should tell you the driver version number and date). I'll try to think of how you could change the darkness of your slides. Thanks for your post.
