Scattered around the outskirts of town, but no large battlefields as such. I wasn't there for very long - and it's not my scene - so I didn't look into it in any great depth, or try to find veterans to talk to (I hardly found anyone who spoke English so not sure how much luck you'd have on the talking front) but there are no tours operators in the town. If you found a xe om driver who spoke some English you might be able to explain to one that you wanted to see some of the sights and get a tour around. Sorry, that's probably not too helpful! I would not expect to 'see a battlefield' as such. Most of the residue will be overgrown or taken away for salvage anyway. But if you know where to look, what to look for, and have some people with you who fought there, it can all come alive again. I've done this before in the Ardennes and it was a unforgetable experience.
I have a friend in and she might come with me to help out with translation. MADMAC has been a member since 6/6/2009. Posts: 6,957. Posted by violets on 27/9/2010 at 05:48 I was there 3 years ago and, although I'm not usually interested in such things, I found it fascinating.
The receptionist from the hotel was my guide, (he had a history degree) and I learnt so much. There's not only the hill, which you can really imagine the battle from, but there is a bunker and a really great museum, well great if someone can translate the signs, as he could. You can easily walk to all the main sites. Then 40ks from the centre is General Giap's command post, which I didn't get to but you should be able to do a tour there. Other travellers have mentioned the manager of the DBP hotel as very helpful with local information too. You might want to prepare by going to the Army museum in which has a display on DBP. Posted by MADMAC on 27/9/2010 at 10:50 Violets I studied the battle in some detail. So I know how it unfolded tactically, the weapons that were used by each side, the tactics used by each side and so forth. I've done this with a lot of battles actually, but I've only done terrain walks for a small tactical conflict on the Kyll river in the Schnee Eifel, at the Ardennes that I mentioned and at the Plains of Abraham in Quebec. I'd like to someday do Gettysburg but here in the SEA that battle in particular, which was such a game changer, I am interested in as well. I have yet, to my shame, go to - but it's on the list. Not as a battlefield, but as a show of respect. MADMAC has been a member since 6/6/2009.
Posts: 6,957. Posted by on 27/9/2010 at 13:50 TF writer. It would certainly be a lot more interesting if you have an interest in the battle as you have and find a guide - preferably a veteran.
There is some English in the museum but I always find reading a white label with a basic desription on is a little uninspiring - it only comes to life and means something if I understand the bigger picture. If I went back I would definitely try the DPB Hotel to see if they could provide a guide as I had no luck finding one elsewhere - so thanks for that info Violets.

I remembered being taught about the battle in high school and had always wanted to go there but would never have thought that a blow by blow description could be so interesting. The museum was interesting because I was told the stories behind a lot of the photographs and there's a lighted screen that shows how the battles in the whole area (the same screen is in the army museum in but it only made sense to me because it was explained by the guide). At the bunker I was told the story of the French officer who made some very poor decisions. Most of the tourists in the area seem to be French, trying to find out how they were beaten.
The French behaved so badly in Vietnam (and elsewhere) that it's enjoyable to hear of their defeat. Of course, as is the way with these things, we get the victor's story. Since visiting DBP I've read everything I could find on General Giap (by both sides). I hope you get there and find a good guide, although you could probably do it all yourself if you have a written guide to the area. It's perfectly possible just to walk from one site to another and that is what most people seem to do. Since visiting DBP violets has been a member since 6/7/2009.
Posted by MADMAC on 28/9/2010 at 11:23 Thanks Violets. There were serious problems with French colonial behavior because as a matter of policy they did not see the colonies as locations that should become some sort of 'greater France'. The English had different ambitions which caused them to invest heavily both politically and materially in their colonies in a way the French did not. Having said that, the Viet Minh did not cover themselves in glory with their behavior at Dien Bin Phu or elsewhere. They were a tough and determined military force, and on those grounds I respect them. But like the Imperial Japanese Army, their sense of right and wrong and their adherence to the laws of land warfare were an abomination.
Of the more than 10,000 prisoners taken at Dien Bin Phu when it fell, barely 3,000 were repatriated at the cessation of hostilities four months latter. This is the kind of treatment handed out to Russian prisoners of Nazi Germany and a record that should make the government of Vietnam hang its head in shame. Giap was a competent (not brilliant as some like to paint him) military officer, but he was certainly culpable (as was Ho Chi Minh) concerning the behavior the the Viet Minh and NVA during their protracted conflicts. There was certainly plenty of brutality on all sides during this war, but the vietnamese communist get a special chapter in my book. But I'm not interested in any of that. As a professional soldier, now retired, I am interested in the tactics, doctrine and so forth.
And for that reason, I would like to go there and walk that battlefield. MADMAC has been a member since 6/6/2009. Posts: 6,957. Posted by violets on 2/10/2010 at 13:23 I think you'll have a very interesting time at DBP if you find the right guide. The poor soldiers fighting for France were largely from France's other colonies apparently, which is one reason for the French losing.
General Giap is still alive, in his nineties, living in hanoi and apparently learning the piano. You can buy books about his life and tactics at the museum and while they will be biased, so will any written by his adversaries.
All interesting. Violets has been a member since 6/7/2009. Posted by MADMAC on 3/10/2010 at 00:59 The French lost because their tactical plan was unsound. They parachuted a division (-) (some 10,000 personnel) of light infantry into an area strongly held by the Viet Minh. Although they had early successes in consolidating their objective, their sole line of communication was by air. In 1954 the supply of a division by air for the French Air Force was a daunting task in an area as remote as Dien Bin Phu. The Vietminh amassed some 48,000 combat personnel and another 15,000 support personnel in their counter.
In addition to the numerical issue, the Viet Minh were able to move heavy artillery into position on the high ground in vicinity of the French, and attack their positions with it extremely effectively. In short, the French had no chance in this fight. They were at the disadvatange in every way. The only area where France held a decisive edge was air power, but even there their air advantage could not tip the balance as their ground attack aircraft were too few in number and their ability to identify valid targets too difficult a task. The troops who fought on the French side were quality troops, but it wasn't enough. MADMAC has been a member since 6/6/2009.
Posts: 6,957. Posted by fallinlove on 7/10/2010 at 11:00. Oh I know it. I have just gone across all day yesterday. I have come to Vietnam for 2 weeks for great anniversary of 1000 years Thanglong.
I come back Kiti restaurant on Old Quarter Street after I was so hungry, So I felt their meals were very delicious. I like Hanoi with long and beautiful Dien Bien Phu Str, a strange Old Quarter Street and its culture. Especially, I was told about Hanoi's history with name of Thanglong by a Kiti's waiter. Name of Thanglong means dragons flying up. Following legent, the first Ly King (1000 years ago) saw dragons flying over Ho Guom lake and he named Hanoi (current name) was Thanglong. It's so exciting.
I was very surprised and excited. Now I usually come to Kiti more than because I like to ask waiters about Vietnamese culture or their history. Fallinlove has been a member since 28/9/2010. Posted by on at 09:40 Madmac: I'm guessing you've read 'Hell in a Very Small Place', by Bernard Fall. As an infantry veteran, I find parts of it difficult to read.
This discomfort is probably exacerbated by knowing how the whole misguiding operation ended. As for Gettysburg, I highly recommend it. I've only been there once, but it was an eye-opening experience, after having read much about it for decades, to see the actual place. How the hills are, how close the town is to the Union lines. The effective range of a Sharps carbine (460 meters/500 yards), and what that meant at the time. Devastating, to say the least.

Posted by MADMAC on at 16:34 Michael It's interesting that you can see how the French drew the conclusions they drew when deciding to establish their positions in Dien Bin Phu. They logically (though erroneously) concluded the Viet Minh would not be able to move large bore artillery into position to engage them. The terrain did not favor that. And obviously they figured their air superiority would be able to hurt the Viet Minh badly if they could get them into a place where they could be targetted. Their presence would impact on Viet Minh resupply and their campaign in Laos (not much discussed even now).
So it's easy to see how they miscalculated. We did the same thing in Khe Sahn and it worked.
NVA casualties were horrific. The difference, of course, was firepower. The Fench couldn't muster nearly the firepower required to do what they wanted to do. I always thought the story of it being a feint for Tet was hillarious.
Given the timing, and the duration, it's a ludicrous arguement. What unit did you serve with? MADMAC has been a member since 6/6/2009. Posts: 6,957. Posted by on at 21:05 Hi Mac: I was in the 1/52 Inf. It was part of the 198th LIB / Americal Division.
Division hq was in Chu Lai. My battalion operated in province, northwest of Quang Ngai city, in an area bounded by two large rivers, Highway One and the mountains (into which we occasionally ventured). As to French conclusions, I agree. Strategically, I get it. Logistically, not so much. The only reason Khe Sanh worked out for us (militarily) was because our air strength was so huge and Khe Sanh was closer to our other bases as well (compared to the situation at Dien Bien Phu). Beyond that, the French made the same mistake about the Viet Minh they did regarding the Germans and the Ardennes Forest.
Why, no, as a matter of fact. A situation that repeated itself, to some degree, in 1944. In the end, it's also the case that the Viet Minh, and later Viet Cong et al., were fighting for their country and the French & Americans were not. Vastly differing levels of motivation, to say the least. Has been a member since 23/7/2008. Location: Global Village. Posted by MADMAC on at 12:59 Michael I was too young for Vietnam.
I served for 23 years all over, Somalia (which was very difficult), Desert Storm (which was like WW II in the desert with large formations moving about - very strange), Bosnia (easy), Haiti (Depressing), and then 'East Africa' - mostly the Ogaden desert of Ethiopia with a small group of guys. I spent 16 years in Germany, which was great. The Ardennes in the winter of 44 was very difficult to operate in, and the Germans never had a chance. This is why Von Runstedt oppossed the operation in the first place. It did achieve surprise, and local numerical superiority, but that's about all.
I thought the US Army performmed well in Vietnam. We emphasized our strengths, minimized our weaknesses. But the enemy only had to keep a force in being to eventually win, and they did.
That's the strategy that the Taliban is using today. To win small wars you: 1. Don't over-commit forces. Only deploy a force strength you can sustain.
Have patience, because they take a long time. Back to Dien Bin Phu, the French thought they could handle the logistics from the air, and there was no branch plan. If they didn't work, they didn't have something to fall back on. MADMAC has been a member since 6/6/2009. Posts: 6,957 Please login to add a reply.
March 04, 2018 - Update to v4.0.983 With 7 new maps, controller support, noticeable improvements of the bots and much more, the new version is a huge update. The bots were mostly expelled, that they repeatedly shoot through walls. But also the selection of the opponent has been improved - so infantry will no more shoot at tanks with AK-47 or M-16;) All maps were performance-checked and the result is a significant increase in FPS. The maps are remakes of many well-known maps. Checkout the or buy the game in. If you already purchased the game you can download the new in our shop / MY DOWNLOADS.
(Note: The download in the shop shows the link to the purchased game. This link always loads the currently available version!) Steam users automatically get the update via Steam. Bad Moon Rising Is one of three well known old maps from the early days of EoD. It is a night-map with a densely covered swamp and is really exciting, because you often see the opponents very late! Hill 937 Also a well known old map about the famous hard-fought Hamburger Hill. Like many others it has a day- and night mode and offers plenty of variety.
Lam Son Lam Son was a very popular map in the old BF42 modification, because the relatively small map offers very quick fights and race for the flags. This also happens in the re-make, at least the feeling against bots is almost the same as with the old EoD! Surrounded You have to defend an US-Camp while Charlie is attacking from all sides! Sa Pa Is like Lam Son a very small map with fast fights. It also was very popular in the old game.
Rich trouton on twitter: deploying sophos enterprise antivirus for mac.
Vinh Loc The third ancient map from EoD. Capture an island that is hold by Vietcong. But please use one of the boats, helicopters or aircrafts and don't swim;) Pleiku Mansion Is a brandnew map. NVA tries to hold a nobel quarter of Pleiku and gets attacked by a lot of US infantry and tanks. This is harder than expected, because the tanks can logically only be attacked with bazookas, but there are enough of them lying around the hot spots.US troops will have to storm the beach before they can capture flags. It's a little bit like Omaha Beach in Vietnam. Kill Major Shorty Someone wrote about the -for 15 years- missing EoD mission 'Kill Colonel Kurtz' wich is of course an allusion to the film 'Apocalypse Now'.
Well I'm working on this map but Kurtz is now Shorty and he was degraded to Major and of course it will not be a copy of the film. But it will have a large river with lots of enemies and a boss-monster at the end of the river:) Credits A big thanks to the players who contribute with constructive criticism and motivation to improve EOD. In particular a thanks to Luckensscott and FMhades! Provisional Changelog MENU - removed the screenshot delete button for security reasons SINGLEPLAYER - improved Doorgunner mode - fixed bot ragdoll freezing in T-pose MULTIPLAYER - decreased run stamina to 60 sec. MAPS - new map: Da Nang - new map: Face to face - Que Son Valley - fixed culling bug WEAPONS - new flamethrower added GAMEPLAY - overworked/improved sight of the handweapons - disabled crosshair, aiming, shooting and reload while running - disabled crosshair, aiming, shooting and reload while moving and in prone position - added weapon sway while running - decreased run speed - decreased ladder climb speed - decreased speed in water - you now can select another weapon at ammoboxes and -lockers within 60 sec.
The Viet Minh team was newly included in the game and is nothing more than the Vietcong just with other hats. These hats look a little bit ugly, but they shouldn't be more pretty than in real life;) Checkout the or if you already purchased the game go to the shop and download the new. December 05, 2016 - Plans for 2017 There are plans to add more EoD-typical music to the game coming with the next patch in 2017! Just the main music title 'Alone in my prison' will not be part cause there's no way to contact it's producer. Cause of copyrights I can't use this song without an agreement with the musician. Apart from other things I'm working on a new project for EoD, a scene called 'Operation Arc Light'.
This scene is a real huge map just for dogfights and the size is not comparable with all ever existing maps in EoD! Large maps can make a lot of trouble cause it's no fun to fly around and don't see any enemies in the sky. So I'll have to find a way to fill this scene with action.
With a little luck the patch will be released in early 2017! October 23, 2016 - EoD v4.0.886 release As promised - however faster as expected - the update to v4.0.886 was finished today and is now available! Checkout the or if you already purchased the game go to the shop and download the new. The changes are extensive and especially the AI was improved.
Also there's another scene called All Along The Watchtower that should remind of Hamburger Hill and of course Jimmy Hendrix.
Here's the official Changelog: GAME - fixed the french flag - fixed audio bug playing hymns at flag for several times in multiplayer HUD - colored health display AI - improved AI code - added a multiplier for number of bots in Combat mode (2,3,4,5,6,7,8,10x) (This affects the performance!
So far, it is almost impossible to find suitable multiplayer rooms, cause the game is still to unknown. To find someone who plays online is rather a coincidence. Further measures are planned to change this, which, however, will take some time:.
Organization of a regular monthly events Problem: global implementation (time zones), so that all players will find the opportunity to participate. Publication in one or more of the 3 major game platforms.
further advertising measures Bugfixing The demo has shown that there are some minor bugs and that the AI needs improvement. Of course these suggestions will be fixed but first let's play it a while! You may send your suggestions to at any time.
Modifications I've tried the mod-ability of EoD and I must say: it goes really fast! In just 4 days EoD was converted so that it can be also a paintball game. This looks very different, plays out differently, and may as well be a separate game! Maybe there's a 'free extensions' menu point soon here on this page?;) Jocoseness June 01, 2016 - Release! Eve of Destruction - Redux (EoD) is available now through our. Endless Night.
As you can see the first release date (1.1.2016) was missed. It's because I've found another bug in just 2 of 22 different helicopters. If the player hits an enemy and the enemy respawns after some seconds, the pilot in the helicopter dies!?!? Damn I can't imagine what causes this problem especially because this happens in just 2 helicopters and the other vehicles work fine. But no release with such an fatal error, sorry! Please be patient, it's coming soon:-) December 04, 2015 - Release in sight!
It's coming soon! Currently I'm fighting with a small but persistent network-bug (the statistics counts the frags from vehicles incorrectly). But I'm optimistic that EoD Redux will be finished before Christmas! With a one man Game Studio it unfortunately takes some more time to finish things and I don't want to stress my family with a release before Christmas, cause they supported me with motivation in the past 3 years. Also the official age ratings have to be done, which will take about 2-3 weeks. And we have to find a solution to sell the game online. A good online WebShop is found and it also works, but there is are some adjustments to be done.
Scene from Tonkin Raid Of course the famous phrase 'when it's done' is still effective, but the beginning of the new year should be realistic. For sure the demo will be available on new years day! Please advertise on friends and relatives, so the Game Studio will have some more employee and a faster release of EoD Redux II:-) Because some people asked multiple times, here are some information: The game is a paid version without hidden extra costs. Once purchased you'll buy the complete game without having to buy extra-items or other benefits. So players will have the same opportunities online! There will be an online Web store, where you can order the game, pay and download on the same day.
Alternatively you can buy the game on a 'EoD-Redux-Special-Punji bamboo USB-stick':-) September 22, 2015 - About trailers, cakes and network problems Actually the game is ready for 6 weeks now and should be already on it's way to publication. However, in tests we discovered a problem in network games, wich must necessarily be resolved. As mentioned, every little change has impact in many other areas, causing a new delay. But it can't be stopped anymore:-) Hardcore EoD players know that there are some hardcore gamers at. Take a look at this special trailer and this very very nice cake:-). Thanks for the fotos go to kubi & Braveheart!
July 23, 2015 - Some first impressions of the game The installation of 'artificial intelligence' has delayed the release by half a year, but it was worth it. Here's a video and you can see the gameplay and a few bots. As yet no ESRB rating is done, the video fades out in action-packed places at an early stage. Like in the old EoD the bots can use any vehicle, but with the difference that they have their own vehicles and they don't steal it from the players anymore:-) The list of features and useable objects is now endless and each vehicle has its own driving / flying characteristics.
And because everything is self-coded the development took two and a half years to complete. As in a project of this size was to be expected, not everything works perfectly. Because it's planned that the game is published without making a patch necessary, it still takes some days to clear these things. But it won't be long.
Eve of Destruction - Redux - first impressions.
Is it possible? Yes of course and with about 70 FPS without problems as you can see in the short demo-video.
It's just a testmap and there could be about 130 land vehicles and about 200 different soldiers but this would result in unacceptable FPS:-) These guys are flying some random waypoints in a very small radius so it may sometimes look a little bit strange, but you can imagine how it looks in a huge landscape with mountains and jungle. AI Test Air Vehicles.
The bots must be teached for every single step. No pixel will move automatically cause the bot has no ammo left:) And because everything is handmade it will take some more time to finish everything. But as a reward it makes a lot of fun to play against the AI - if you have no internet connection or player colleagues available! So it will still take some time till everything is fine-tuned. But the game definitely will be released, cause more than 2 years of work will not be in vain! March 31, 2015 - About traps, elephants, jets and other things Since January I'm working feverishly on the single player mode, what seems to be the hardest part of the project.
But the bots are running and doing a good job! It took much more time than expected but it's fact that this is a one-man project without employees and without any budget and imho the results look quite good. Because there is still no age rating, the videos are of course harmless and without any action and only serve as illustrative material. And please note: it is still 'WIP-material' (WIP = work in progress)! Have much fun with the short videos. Charlie don't surf, Landing at the beach.
But a backup is no backup if it's on the same machine and so 3 other backups (furtunatelly just some hours old) could be restored. The PC is currently running with a 300 Watt power supply from the 90's, and it is quite remarkable that such an old power supply is running a current processor + graphics card + two hard drives:-) In december I begun to add AI (artificial intelligence) to the game to make EoD Redux playable in offline-/singleplayer-mode. This is harder than expected cause every little step has to be explained for the bots! It's known from other games: bots run against walls, jump in suicidal intent under vehicles and respond very strange sometimes. So it will take some time to get satisfactory results. A nice gimmick could be completed in december: there is built a football pitch for a little match in some maps:-) Historically correct it should be a basketball court, but football is more fun and and sense, because of the feasibility!
With some training, you can shoot world-beating goals. So the release date is delayed again but you know: 'When it's done!'
;-) November 1, 2014 - Alpha tests finished Alpha-testing is finished and there are some more bugs to be fixed and all the maps and coding have to be optimized for better performance. It will still take some time to get all things together working propperly but it's worth to wait and prevent bugfixing AFTER release!
Another delay is caused by the website and shop. It's not as easy ' just opening an onlineshop'. There are a lot of things to be pointed out: statutory provisions, age rating, payment options, registration, copyright protection and much more. A group of a hundred is needed to manage all these things. Or a one-man-army:) October 17, 2014 - Test Stage Alpha-testing has begun though the game isn't finished and running like clockwork. Testers reported about 200 bugs and suggestions for improvement and everything is fixed already.
But the test stage is the reason for another delay and the amount of features makes it lot more complex and there are many good new ideas to implement. August 27, 2014 - Game almost finished The hardest part is done. Multiplayer is working fine and we will start testing very soon. Not every map has got singleplayer and the release is depending on this fact. What I want is singleplayer mode in each map with some kind of intelligent bots, though the game is primary focused on multiplayer. So there may be another -short- delay to finish the singleplayer-part.
Thanks to Jan for the idea! The original ruins in Cambodia: March 25, 2014 - Demo available now The webserver was moved to a new hardware and the demo is available now! Please take notice that it's a not optimized work-in-progress-demo and may cause lag on older CPU! March 23, 2014 - Webserver trouble Some people reported problems and interrupted downloads. This is caused by the webserver and will be fixed soon. Meanwhile the demo will not be available, please try again later. March 22, 2014 - First Demo available A first WIP-demo is available now (WIP = work in progress).
March 18, 2014 - Group photograph Here's a first picture of the actress. The teams will be expanded until release. February 14, 2014 - Newsletter You can subscribe for a newsletter now and get information if there are news about the game.
February 14, 2014 - Rice-harvest in Que Son Valley Some impressions of Que Son valley.
